Failure is always looked down upon, it’s seen as something bad. Society is one reason where if you fail once it means you are stupid.
As Janet Fitch said, “A phoenix must burn to emerge.”
Failure affects some more than others, some learn from it and some sulk over it. In school, we are taught to focus more on grades that we forget to enjoy learning. This system is so ingrained in us that we start to generalize and eventually see failure as a bad thing. Failure in itself has never done any harm, it’s the people and the way they see it.
I’ll talk about 4 reasons failure is good and how one can learn to handle it.
A second chance
Failing at something only means you have to try again, whether it’s a project, subject or an entire year’s drop. It means you have the opportunity to learn better and note where you made mistakes the first time.
True potential
Accepting failure is not easy. Accepting that you tried and failed is extremely hard-hitting, but getting up and facing it is when you know, you have true potential. Sometimes when you fail at something you may get upset and some even get depressed over it, moving forward isn’t easy but it is a decision one must make; to move forward and learn from that mistake or to cry over spilt milk. This shows more potential than any mark sheet.
Facing your fears
Many are afraid to fail. Children are afraid to fail with the fright of what will their parents and others think. What we should learn is that these small failures will help paint a bigger picture in the future. It helps in improving one’s learning and understanding ourselves as to what is suitable for us and not. Facing failure is one of the toughest but most important things to do in life.
Hard-earned victory
We know that the harder we try the better and more satisfying the outcome is. After studying long and hard for a test you failed at, scoring high or even passing is a sweet victory, its one feeling only those who have seen rock bottom can tell.
Here is how one can learn to overcome it,
The 5 stages of grief are denial, anger, depression, bargain and acceptance. We must go through this once in our life to know what it is like to be at your lowest to get to your highest.
One failure does not define you. Knowing that this one set back does not define who you are as a person or how hard you work.
Remember you will not always succeed in everything and failure is a part of growing up. Understand what your potential is.
It’s not the end. Once you hit rock bottom you don’t see any plus to it. It’s a feeling where you feel empty and that you will never get up again. We must always remember that if we don’t fail we will never learn, so failing is never the end, it’s the start.
Feel every emotion. One of the things that helped me overcome failure is feeling the grief, hopelessness, fear, sadness and anger. Feeling all that pain helped me discover that I can write poems. It's okay to be sad and dejected before you start to hustle. IT IS OKAY TO NOT FEEL OKAY.
Find inspiration. Seeing people just like you falling and getting up and succeeding is helpful. If they can do it so can you. Understand that failure is what made your role model what they are, so don’t shy away from it but embrace it.
Not listening to negative words. It is so easy to get carried away with people’s words when they tell us a certain dream we have is useless or it has no scope. We tend to adjust and go with the flow and go with what’s easy because we are too scared to fail. What we don’t realize is that people will criticize us no matter what so why not do something you love and enjoy it, even if we fail we will are only learning.
Not only people but we can be our biggest critic. STOP PUTTING YOURSELF DOWN.
Be constructive. Falling means you have other chances to try it but that does not mean you keep trying and not learn from your previous mistakes. It’s important to understand where you went wrong and how can you improve on those mistakes, to do better and excel.
Failure is spoken about often but it's still a lingering issue especially in students today. Speaking from experience, the moment you accept you will make mistakes and fail that is when you will shine. Mourn all you want while you’re at it but when you decide to move forward don’t turn back to think what you could do better.
Let the past be a lesson for your present and a story for the future.
